Summer is almost over and school is right around the corner. Some of us are asking ourselves if we are going to have a good roommate this year. You might think your best friend from high school would be the perfect option – but there are some things to consider.
1. Be honest when filling out your roommate preferences. Everyone has boundaries. It can be easy to get on each other’s nerves from something as simple as being a morning person or a night owl. This is why it’s so important to be honest from the beginning. If your high school bestie enjoys binging Netflix at night while you like to get to sleep early, they may not be the best option.
2. Clean up after yourself. No one wants to live in a room with overflowing garbage or dirty laundry intruding their personal space. Try to keep your side of the room clean and your roommate might follow your lead. It’s always better to have a clean living environment to help you stay focused on school.
3. Having similar interests. Do you and your roommate have things in common? It can help you get to know each other and give you something to talk about. Having the same major or hobbies will ensure that your down time will fly by, and you might even have a study buddy!
4. Always respect their privacy. While it might sound like a no-brainer, don’t borrow your roommate’s things without asking! They might be comfortable with you sharing items, but it is always a good idea to ask first. Setting boundaries with your roommate from the beginning can be the best tool to avoiding awkward situations or misunderstandings.
I know these tips will help you find the perfect roommate – and be one too! By following these guidelines you should have a great roommate experience this year.
